Council approves $9 million inner-city units complex

INNER-CITY living in Hobart just got a little easier with a $9 million social housing complex given the green light.

INNER-CITY living in Hobart will soon get a little easier with a $9 million social housing complex given the green light.

A development application by the State Government for the apartment block as part of its affordable housing development program was approved by Hobart City Council on Monday night.

It passed 10 to one with only Alderman Eva Ruzicka voting against the development.

The Housing Tasmania proposal is for a five-level block on Goulburn St between Barrack and Harrington streets to accommodate elderly and special-needs residents.

It will consist of 25 apartments — seven one-bedroom units and 18 two-bedroom units.

The council uses the site as a car park.

Meanwhile, the vote on a $9 million private development for a 10-storey residential complex with 34 apartments on Bathurst St was deferred.
