AN exhibition that showcases the diverse and jaw-dropping new architecture produced around the state has opened in Hobart.

The Tasmanian Architecture Awards Exhibition at Brooke St Pier has 35 projects entered in the 2019 awards program on display, as well as 10 projects eligible for the Triennial Prize.

Pharos Mona, Peppers Silo Hotel in Launceston and Freycinet Lodge’s Coastal Pavilions are among the top tourist attractions in the spotlight.

Other projects on display have a strong community focus, including the Domain Community Hub, the Ulverstone Secondary College extension, and the Glenorchy Health Centre.

“As usual, a high level of inventiveness is evident, with Tasmanian architects stretching lean budgets to produce spatially rich and engaging buildings,” jury chair and JAWS Architects director Neal Mackintosh said.

Awards across nine categories are based on a three-tier system, with the highest achievement being the “Named’’ Award, followed by an Architecture Award, then a commendation.

Award recipients in each category, along with a number of other honours including the Enduring Architecture Award, the President’s Prize, the Triennial Prize and the SWT Blythe Student Prize, will be announced at a presentation ceremony at the Odeon Theatre in Hobart on July 6.

All Tasmanians are invited to take a look at the breadth of new architecture being produced in the state and vote for their favourite project in the People’s Choice either at the exhibition, or online at wp.architecture.com.au/tasawards/

The exhibition will be on show at the boarding deck of Brooke Street Pier, Hobart, seven days a week, until July 14.

A liftout of all the winners will be published in the Sunday Tasmanian on July 7.
