Frankston South house price record: Beachfront home with Hugh Jackman link to raise bar by $10m

A palatial home on a private beach considered as a Melbourne base for Hugh Jackman is set to blow price records out of the water in the Frankston region. Step inside the jaw-dropping pad.

A private beachfront Frankston South mansion considered as a Melbourne base for Hugh Jackman is poised to smash the suburb’s house price record by more than $10m.

Deborra-lee Furness’ stepfather inquired about the 636 Nepean Highway property with a lift, 250-bottle wine cellar and a viewing tower on the family’s behalf last year.

While nothing proceeded, the A-lister is still understood to have his eyes out for a home in the area, prompting hopes his star-power may yet supercharge the Mornington Peninsula the way Hollywood heavyweights Liam and Chris Hemsworth have turned Byron Bay into a global celebrity haunt.

The palatial property, owned and built by Rawdon Hill Homes founders Geoff and Sue Hardie, extends to the sands of Dolphin Cove and is now officially on the market for $15.5m-$17m.

The pair spent three years building the home after its predecessor slipped off its footings and had to be demolished.

They’ve taken steps to ensure that never happens again, installing 13m deep foundations like those used for the Rialto towers in the CBD. Now the only movement at the home is from local echidnas and birdlife.

“We had a dolphin out the front yesterday, and while it’s rare we have had whales out the front as well,” Ms Hardie said.

The rear of the house has huge windows and opens to a deck that takes in the bay and setting sun.

At the bottom of popular Oliver’s Hill, there is just a gate between the home and a private beach — which is separated from Frankston Beach and Kackeraboite Creek Beach by rocky outcroppings and only accessible from the handful of homes built on the bay side of the Nepean Highway.

While it will be hard to farewell the home where their daughter was married, she said they hoped a younger family would enjoy its blend of traditional and modern architecture.

“We have had our drinks on the beach and standing in the water, and it has just been idyllic,” Ms Hardie said.

O’Brien Mornington’s Daniel Gallagher is handling the sale and said he’d be very happy if the Jackman family renewed their interest, with a deal having the potential to supercharge the Mornington Peninsula as the Hemsworth effect did Byron Bay.

Mr Gallagher said whoever bought the home was likely to spend more money updating it as, while it was still state-of-the-art in many ways, it had been built in 2007.

Yesterday he had already received calls from a handful of prominent business owners about the home.

He said the property’s 1.95ha size, the impressive house and rare water views to Melbourne’s CBD made it one of the best homes on the Mornington Peninsula.

CoreLogic records show the suburb’s current home price record is the $5.85m paid for 18 Yamal Drive in September last year.
