Exclusive: Personal contact details of Vice President Kamala Harris have been leaked online by a hacker in an extraordinary security breach, just a day after the US election.
Hacker Kiberphant0m posted an extract of phone records belonging to the Democrat, who on Wednesday lost her presidential bid for the White House, on an encrypted messaging application and a private hacker forum – and is now threatening to do the same to Donald Trump.
The classified documents include the names and phone numbers of calls made by Ms Harris between October 1 and 31, 2022, including one to her pastor, civil rights campaigner Amos C. Brown.
Pastor Brown confirmed his identity to this masthead when contacted and said to make an appointment with his office at the Third Baptist Church in San Francisco.
“That’s right, that’s my office,” he said, when first phoned around 10pm local time (5pm AEDT, Thursday).
When asked if he was Pastor Brown he said “Yes”.
Another call to a number registered to the name Whitman Meeks Whirthlin – believed to be a customer experience specialist from Salt Lake City, Utah – went to a voicemail message that said “You’ve reached Whit. Leave me a message.”
A call to Ms Harris’ number made at about midnight local time in Washington DC (4.20pm AEDT) immediately diverted to an automated voicemail.
Kiberphant0m breathtaking data dump is in an apparent escalation of the hacker’s negotiations with global phone company AT&T, although his demands are unclear.
Kiberphant0m has asked the telco to contact him and an associate named Reddington by Sunday.
“TRUMP and Vice President of the United States CALL LOGS -- OFFICIAL WARNING TO ATNT,” said Kiberphant0m.
“If you do (not) contact me or Reddington by Sunday, consider all of the Data to be leaked.
“You have until Sunday to contact me or Reddington.
“In the event you do not reach out to us @ATNT all presidential government call logs will be leaked. You don’t think we don’t have plans in the event of an arrest? Think again.
“I’d highly advise you to contact us.
“Have fun with the media coverage, shouldn’t (have) dragged it on
Kiberphant0m’s post includes a link to a zipfile with the phone number of Ms Harris as well as the names and phone numbers of anyone she contacted during the 25-day period.
The hacker then said #FREEWAIFU five times in an apparent reference to Alexander ‘Connor’ Moucka, who is the alleged mastermind behind the hack on cloud storage provider Snowflake.
Moucka was arrested in Canada last week and faces extradition to the USA.
Authorities claim the Snowflake attack resulted in the leak of personal consumer data to more than 100 companies, including AT&T, Neiman Marcus and possibly Ticketmaster.
Using the pseudonym “Judische”, the hacker allegedly then threatened to sell the stolen information unless the companies paid a ransom.
Ms Harris conceded defeat to Mr Trump on Thursday at Howard University in Washington DC and promised a peaceful transition of power.
“I know everyone feels we are entering a dark time,” she said.
“America if it is, let us fill the sky with the light of a billion of brilliant stars.
The light of optimism, of faith, of truth, and service.”
Ahead of the election, US officials warned of the threat of hackers and foreign interference, specifically from Russia and Iran.
Throughout the campaign, foreign actors used fake social media profiles and websites to spread disinformation.
An AT&T spokesman said “We don’t have any comment”.
The FBI was contacted for comment.
