US President Donald Trump diagnosed with chronic condition after leg swelling concerns

White House correspondents were stunned when President Donald Trump’s press secretary revealed he has been diagnosed with a chronic condition amid speculation about his bruised hands.

United States President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with a blood circulation condition after experiencing swelling in his legs.

The White House revealed the president’s diagnosis with the condition chronic venous insufficiency, a common ailment for those aged over 70.

Eagle-eyed members of the public had repeatedly pointed out bruising on the 79-year-old President’s hands in recent months.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the bruising was a result of aspirin use and soft tissue irritation from regularly shaking hands while revealing his circulation disorder.

“In the effort of transparency, the president wanted me to share a note from his physician with all of you today,” Ms Leavitt announced in her daily briefing at the White House on Friday Australian time.

“In recent weeks, President Trump noted mild swelling in his lower legs, in keeping with routine medical care, and out of an abundance of caution, this concern was thoroughly evaluated by the White House medical unit.

“The president underwent a comprehensive examination, including diagnostic vascular studies, bilateral lower extremity, venous Doppler ultrasounds were performed and revealed chronic venous insufficiency … a common condition, particularly in individuals over the age of 70.”

Mr Trump was the oldest person ever to assume the US Presidency and was 78 at the time he was sworn in.

Ms Leavitt said the President otherwise remained “in excellent health”, noting there were no signs of arterial disease, deep vein thrombosis, renal impairment or heart failure.

“Recent photos of the president have shown minor bruising on the back of his hand,” she said.

“This is consistent with minor soft tissue irritation from frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin, which is taken as part of a standard cardiovascular prevention regimen.

“This is a well-known and benign side effect of aspirin therapy and the president remains in excellent health, which I think all of you witness on a daily basis here.”

The disclosure comes amid an inquiry into how former President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis was not discovered earlier, or whether it was intentionally kept secret from the public as he ran for re-election.

Mr Trump has accused his predecessor and aides of covering up his declining mental state and ill health.
