Comedian and television star Jon Stewart screamed expletives during an impassioned monologue on The Daily Show as it became clear Donald Trump had pulled off a remarkable victory.

Polling in the lead-up to yesterday’s historic election put Mr Trump and Kamala Harris neck-and-neck, in what was meant to be a close contest that could take days to deliver a victor.

But in the end, in the early hours of the morning local time, the former president emerged victorious with a mammoth lead, winning both the electoral college and the popular vote.

Republicans will retake the Senate and could also seize control of the House of Representatives, delivering the party significant power.

Ms Harris yesterday failed to perform better than incumbent Joe Biden, who Democrats forced out after polls showed he was bound for a humiliating defeat, anywhere in the country.

The left-wing host of the popular comedic political news series told “all political pollsters” to “blow me” and that “I don’t ever wanna hear from you again”.

“You don’t know s*** about s****,” Stewart said on air, sparking laughter from the studio audience.

He also took aim at the inevitable dissecting of the result and what it means for the United States, which has already commenced.

Offering a “matter of perspective” that concluded furiously with bleeped-out swearing, Stewart declared that political commentators conducting a post mortem of the stunning defeat over coming days “will be wrong”.

“The lessons that our pundits take away from these results, that they will pronounce with certainty, will be wrong. And you have to remember that.”

In 2008 following the election of Barack Obama, ABC News star George Stephanopoulos said there was “no question” the historic moment showed America was “moving to a post-racial America”.

“Yeah, that lasted a day,” Stewart said.

Four years later when he was re-elected, former conservative Fox News host Bill O’Reilly tipped that Republicans would “send a powerful signal to Hispanic that the party respects them”.

“That was the lesson they learnt … and signal to the Hispanic community the GOP did,” Stewart quipped before playing an infamous clip of Mr Trump from 2016 saying Mexico was “sending drugs, crime, and their rapists” across the border.

“Which apparently was the winning message,” Stewart yelled. “And that taught Democrats in 2016 what?”

Stewart played a compilation of clips featuring pundits and commentators declaring the Democrats would turn to “a new generation” of leader to revive and re-energise the party following Hillary Clinton’s bruising defeat.

“Need I say it?” Stewart joked.

Footage of President Joe Biden being formally declared the Democratic nominee in 2020 then played.

“And that turned out to be a winning message again, which led to an insurrection. And the lesson from that was …” he trailed off, before a pundit predicted Mr Trump would be a “pariah” after losing to Mr Biden.

“Donald Trump will never be allowed to set foot in the capital again,” one forecast.

While Stewart’s dismay and anger was evident, there were a few hopeful moments, including his belief that “this isn’t the end”.

“This isn’t the end. I promise you, this is not the end. And we have to regroup and we have to continue to fight and continue to work day in and day out to create the better society for our children, for this world, for this country that we know is possible. It’s possible.”

Stewart said that what he knew for sure was “we’re going to come out of this election and we’re going to make all kinds of pronouncements about what this country is, and what this world is, and the truth is we’re not really going to know s***”.

He added: “And we’re going to make it seem like this is the finality of our civilisation and this or that.”

As the new day dawned, the left would need to “work like hell to move the world to the place that we’d prefer to be”, he said.

When camera stopped rolling and the broadcast was over, Stewart reportedly wandered into the audience to continue his hopeful message to the left.

According to Variety, he began by thanking them for being with him.

“Can I tell you what a joy you were, how happy I am to have spent the evening with you and not sitting at home throwing s*** at my television screen,” Stewart said.

“You have helped us all have a beautiful distraction, and you’re gonna leave here, and you’re gonna look at your phone, and you’re gonna go home, and you’re gonna have that weird feeling where your knees feel wobbly, and you’re like, ‘Do I have hypoglycaemia?’

“But you don’t! You just have a temporary anxiety and paralysis that comes with disappointment and just a soupçon of despair.”

“It will pass. And we will be back, digging ditches for democracy once again in the way that we have always had to do, and I thank you guys for your dedication, and I thank you for being here. Get home safe.”
