There are “no survivors” after a horror collision between a passenger jet and a military helicopter close to the centre of Washington DC, President Donald Trump has confirmed.

Sixty-seven people are believed to have perished when an American Airlines plane from Wichita, Kansas, collided with a US Army Black Hawk, sending both aircraft plummeting into the frigid waters of the Potomac River.

It is the worst US air disaster since 2001.

Recovery Effort Continues on Potomac as No Crash Survivors Expected

The passenger plane, a Bombardier CRJ700 jet, being operated by regional airline PSA for American Airlines, had 64 passengers and crew on board.

Flight AA5342 was coming in to land at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport at about 9pm (1pm Thursday AEDT) when tragedy struck.

The Black Hawk (H-60), with three people on board, was flying down the Potomac River.
