Detectives have charged an elderly woman over the death of six-year-old schoolboy Caleb Wesley following a nearly eight-month investigation.

Caleb was walking along Bannockburn-Shelford Rd in Teesdale to catch a bus to Covenant College in Bell Post Hill on March 27 when he was allegedly fatally struck by a car.

It’s alleged the driver of the car, an 84-year-old woman, left the scene and was later found at a Teesdale property.

Victoria Police Sergeant Melissa Seach confirmed on Tuesday that Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives had charged an elderly woman over the alleged hit-run.

“The vehicle involved allegedly left the scene and was later located at an address in Teesdale,” Ms Seach said.

The woman was charged with failing to stop, failing to render assistance and failing to report a collision.

The woman has been bailed to appear at Geelong Magistrates Court on November 28.

Following the charges, Caleb’s father, Surendra Wesley, reaffirmed he had forgiven the woman “but forgiveness does not mean there are no consequences for actions”.

The Teesdale pastor said the length of the investigation had, at times, proved frustrating.

“In the end we didn’t want to be contacted until it was completely finalised,” he said.

“Whatever the charges she will face, the government has to do their job and they are doing it.

“They need to prevent future incidents like this from happening again.”

He said if his family is called to give evidence in court “our stance will remain the same.”

“The punishment of what she has been charged with will be punishment enough,” he said.

“We want her to be at ease in some respect and not to think she is a horrible person. This happened and she is unfortunately a part of it.

“It is a bad tag she has to carry with her.”

Born in Perth, Caleb moved to Teesdale in 2019 and attended Covenant College in Bell Post Hill.

He is survived by his father and mother May, sister Ella and brother Elijah.
