Woman dies after being struck standing next to broken down car

A young woman has died on a major freeway after being hit by a car while standing by her own vehicle that had run out of petrol.
The woman had been travelling with another woman when the car broke down on the northbound carriageway of the Kwinana Freeway in Stake Hill at 10.40pm on Thursday.
The pair had pulled over to the side of the road and exited the vehicle when one of the passengers, a 26-year-old, was struck by a Mitsubishi Outlander.
She suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.
The driver of the Outlander did not sustain any injuries and stopped at the scene, according to 7NEWS.
Northbound lanes of the Kwinana Freeway were closed between Mandjoogoordap Dr and Paganoni Rd for several hours after the incident, causing heavy congestion in the area.
The road reopened at around 6am on Friday AWST.
