A teenager who was surfing south of Perth has described being shaken by a 2m shark that attacked him about just after dawn.

Zachary Hlaing was bitten on his left leg and foot while surfing at Pyramids Beach near Mandurah, about 85km south of Perth, about 4.35am on Tuesday.

The surfer told 7News he felt something grab his leg, then shook it a bit before letting go.

“It all happened so fast,” Mr Hlaing said.

“We saw a big tail just flap up and a big splash and then it let go and swam off.

“I was just in shock.

“We hopped on the boards and started paddling, didn’t think anything of it really, just went in.”

Fellow surfer Jay Reeves heard Mr Hlaing yell out that he had been bitten and paddled out of the water to get his car.

Mr Reeves piggybacked the injured surfer to the car where he wrapped a towel around his bleeding leg and foot and rushed him to Peel Health Campus to get medical treatment.

“(He) was just the most calm, collected person you’ve ever met, like as if nothing’s happened,” he said.

“I looked up, saw the blood dripping and that was it, paddled in, no stress, completely relaxed and just the gnarliest dude.”

The attack hasn’t shaken up the injured surfer too much, telling reporters he was keen to get back in the water as soon as possible.

“I’ve been surfing pretty much my whole life because Dad got me into it and we live near the beach,” Mr Hlaing said.

“It’s pretty much all I do in the summer.

“Maybe I won’t go to the same spot for a while but as soon as I can I’ll be out there.”
