WA Police vehicle ramming incident

The grandmother of a three-year-old Geraldton boy who was run over and “dragged like a dog” has begged for the community to “pray” for the family’s “miracle child”.

The three-year-old remains in critical condition in Perth Children’s Hospital after a white Hyundai i30 ran over him and dragged him along Aaron Close in the suburb of Karloo about 6pm Tuesday night.

Police said the boy was sitting on the verge when he was hit.

His grandmother, Kylie Dalgety, said surgeons had called the boy a “miracle child”.

“Fractures and brain surgery team said he’s a miracle child. So everyone please pray for my grandson’s fast recovery,” she said on social media.

She added her grandson “nearly died” after he was “dragged like a dog”.

She joined authorities in calling for witnesses.

The boy was rushed to the Geraldton Regional Hospital in critical condition before being flown to the Perth Children’s Hospital as a priority one.

According to Senior Sergeant Chris Martin, the incident took place at 6.09pm when a white Hyundai I30 drove into Aaron Close, and then completed a U-turn at the end of the cul-de-sac.

It was alleged that the 46-year-old driver then began driving in a westerly direction on Aaron Close and hit the boy, who was sitting on the southern verge of the street.

The boy was believed to be dragged by the car for an undetermined period before the vehicle finally stopped.

Western Australia Police say the driver is assisting with inquiries.

While it is unknown whether the driver reported the incident, Sgt Martin confirmed that the driver was assisting police with inquiries to figure out how the crash occurred.

“I will say from the onset it appears to be an accident at this stage, there’s no indication of any deliberate actions or motive behind it,” he said.

“Aaron Close is a dog-leg left for southbound traffic entering Aaron Close from Assen Street. The road is sealed, and the area is built up with houses on both sides.”

A witness who was at the scene said he put a pillow under the boy’s head when he found him on the ground so that he “could rest his head”.

“It’s dead wrong what happened, but something needs to be done, and if it’s not done more incidents like this can happen,” he said.

The boy was dragged from Aaron Close onto Assen Street before the car stopped, leaving visible markings on the road.

The boy remains in critical condition at the Perth Children’s Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.

As Major crash officers have investigated the scene, police appealed to witnesses who may have seen the incident to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
