Perth swelters through second heatwave of 2024 as mercury passes 45C
One capital city is enduring its second severe heatwave for the year, with the mercury soaring above 45C in multiple locations.

Tourist spot the Swan Valley has sweltered through its hottest day on record, with the mercury surpassing 45C as Perth endures its second major heatwave for the year.
Pearce RAAF Base recorded a top of 45.2C just after midday on Thursday, while the Swan Valley reached 45.1C.
Its previous record for the hottest maximum was 44.5C in February 2022.
Perth Airport reached 44.6C just before midday.
In many parts of Perth the temperature was still hovering above 40C after 3pm.
Energy supplier Synergy has warned people to set their air conditioners to 24C during the heatwave.
Meanwhile, Transperth slowed trains by up to 30km/h due to the heat on Wednesday.
Elsewhere in the state, the mercury also soared, including in Geraldton where it reached 46.5C.
Friday is still expected to be hot, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting 37C for Perth.
But it will be partly cloudy and windy on Saturday, with the mercury expected to drop to 30C.
