Man accused of murdering his mum in a sickening attack

A man is accused of murdering his own mother in a sickening and violent attack and then leading police on a wild car chase.

A man accused of killing his mother in a sickening and violent attack and then fleeing the scene appeared in the Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Harley James Jeffries has been in custody since his dramatic arrest 200km north of where the alleged murder took place.

Mr Jeffries is accused of killing his mother Yvette Marcia Verney, 61, in a violent attack at her Byford home in Perth’s southeast on June 2.

It was Mr Jeffries’ first appearance in the Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court. He was not required to enter a plea as he had his charge read out to him.

Police allege that after Mr Jeffries killed his mother he fled the scene in a silver Peugeot station sedan. He was not seen by police until 9.15pm on the day of the murder, hundreds of kilometres away in the rural town of Moora.

It’s further alleged that during his arrest, Mr Jeffries failed to stop after emergency lights and sirens were activated.

Police deployed a tyre deflation device along the Great Northern Highway in Bindi Bindi, 40km away from where they first spotted him.

Tasers were deployed after Mr Jeffries allegedly began acting aggressively and challenging police.

At the time of Ms Verney’s death, Premier Roger Cook told reporters that the alleged attack was witnessed by a young girl.

It is understood the girl sought help from neighbours as the alleged incident unfolded.

The matter was adjourned to October 16 for a committal mention hearing.
