A man in India is accused of grooming an Australian child on social media over several years, with police saying the girl was 11 when the alleged sexual abuse and intimidation started.

Indian authorities this week charged the man who allegedly used Instagram and WhatsApp to groom the West Australia child.

WA Police said the abuse started in 2020 and continued for several years, causing the child severe trauma.

Detectives found the man in Indore in Madhya Pradesh, and Indian authorities arrested him with the help of Interpol.

He has been charged with criminal intimidation, transmitting material depicting children in sexually explicit act, and sexual harassment upon a child with sexual intent.
