An 18-month-old girl and her 67-year-old grandmother are in hospital after a freak accident saw them hit by an unoccupied car in a suburban Perth street.

The grandmother was holding the baby about 3.30pm on Friday when the car, a Kia Carnival, rolled down a slope in the family’s driveway on Wood Ridge in Edgewater, The West Australian reported.

The pair became trapped underneath as a result.

Neighbours in the quiet cul-de-sac rushed to help the toddler, before emergency services were able to extract the woman from under the car.

Paramedics worked on her for about an hour before she was raced to Royal Perth Hospital with multiple broken bones.

She remains in a critical condition, in an induced coma, and will require facial reconstruction surgery.

The toddler is in a stable condition, but requires surgery on her eye socket after suffering a bleed on the brain and a fractured skull.

Police remain baffled by what caused the car to move, and have confirmed there was no one inside the vehicle at the time.
