A car that was involved in a fiery head on collision killing four people was deliberately driven down the wrong side of a major highway near the Perth Airport, police allege.

Four people were killed after two cars collided and one burst into flames on the Leach Highway in Cloverdale in Perth’s south about 3.40am Monday.

A grey Toyota RAV4 was travelling northeast on the highway near Abernethy Rd, colliding head-on with a silver Toyota Camry taxi near an intersection.

When police arrived at the scene, the RAV4 was engulfed in flames.

Detective Senior Sergeant Hugh Le Tessier said police retrieved an SD card from the RAV4 with footage clearly showing the driver travelling east out of the city when it crossed underneath the Leach Hwy overpass, turned left and up the offramp.

Detective Le Tessier alleged the driver of the RAV4 made a “conscious decision to intentionally drive on the incorrect side of the road.”

“Files on that SD card indicate he was driving through the streets of Belmont and Cloverdale prior to the incident well in excess of the posted speed limits,” he said.

“The RAV4 was completely engulfed in flames, so to retrieve the dashcam is certainly something that we’re very happy to have done.”

Police confirmed the two female passengers in the taxi were a mother and daughter from Perth, as well as the taxi driver.

The 58-year-old taxi driver died at the scene along with the driver of the RAV4 who is yet to be formally identified.

Two female passengers sitting in the rear of the taxi, aged 56 and 81, also died at the scene.

Detective Tesssier said the two women passengers in the taxi were a mother and daughter from Perth.

He said it was such an extremely sad and tragic event for the families who lost loved ones in the fatal crash.

“Whole families have been severely impacted by this,” he said.

Major Crash Investigators shut down the highway between Leach Highway the Tonkin Highway and Orrong Road for about five hours while they examined the fatal crash and removed debris from the road.

Police have called on any witnesses or anyone with footage to contact Crime Stoppers.
