A man has been fatally shot by police after they responded to reports of an armed man in a regional WA city.

A man has been shot and killed by police in Kalgoorlie.

Officers were called to an alley off Whitlock St after reports of a man armed with a gun about 12.15pm Friday.

Shots were fired during the incident, with the man understood to have been hit in the chest by a single shot from an officer.

Paramedics arrived and took the man, believed to be aged in his 50s, to Kalgoorlie Hospital, but he died of his injury about 1.30pm.

His family have since been informed of his death.

“The officers involved in the incident are being provided health and welfare support,” a WA Police spokesperson said.

“As per standard protocol for critical incidents, detectives from Major Crime Division have been deployed to Kalgoorlie to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Officers from the Internal Affairs Unit have also been deployed to Kalgoorlie, and will have oversight of the investigation.”

Kalgoorlie is the largest regional centre in WA’s Goldfields region, about 595km east-northeast of Perth.
