TV Week magazine no longer running Logie Awards

Sixty years after first taking on the Logie Awards, TV Week has taken a step back from the star studded event. Handing over the ceremony to Rizer.

After running the Logie Awards for over 60 years TV Week has decided to take a step back from television’s night of nights.

The shake up means the magazine’s publisher Are Media will maintain ownership of the awards ceremony, but Sydney-based events company Rizer will independently handle day-to-day operations.

TV Week remains the official partner of the event but Rizer will deal with voting, the final nominees and network submissions, which have begun.

Fiona Connolly, Group Publisher, Are Media said: “After the cancellation of the event in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19, we’re excited the TV Week Logie Awards will return in 2022.

“The awards have played a significant role for our business over many years and it has been a privilege to deliver this much-loved event to television fans across the nation. But the time is now right for Are Media to hand the reins over to Australia’s TV industry and its partners to write the next wonderful chapter for the Logies.

“It is of great importance to us that TV Week remains an integral part of the event and we are delighted our iconic brand will continue to be a friend of the Logies as its official media partner, continuing to support local talent as we have done for several decades.”

The name TV Week Logies Awards will remain, but Are Media has spent the last 12 months assessing the future of the event and its ongoing management.

Rizer has produced the red carpet and other event elements of the Logies for the last seven years.

The Logies, which moved from Melbourne to the Gold Coast in 2018, were cancelled due to Covid in 2021 and 2020. They are scheduled to return this year on the Gold Coast and the awards this year will cover both free to air and streaming platforms.

It remains to be seen whether the Victorian Government will make a play to return the event to Crown.

The Logies, run by TV Week for the past 62 years, are still considered the most coveted awards in the Australian industry — comedian Tom Gleeson was the most recent winner in 2019.

Industry blog TV Tonight first reported the news on Thursday. TV expert Colin Vickery said the change of hands could boost the event.

“It could be a very positive thing which will excite all the networks and their stars,” he said.

“The ratings for the Logies have been on a downward trajectory for some time. This might be the change with new blood and enthusiasm that could see it back to its best again.”

A date and location for this year has yet to be announced.
