The seats too close to call: Adam Bandt loses Greens stronghold in Melbourne

Greens leader Adam Bandt has lost his Melbourne seat in another blow to the party, while Teal independent Monique Ryan is losing ground in Kooyong.

Days after the election excitement of Saturday, and overwhelming triumph of Labor, there are still a handful of seats across Victoria that remain too close to call.

Goldstein has finally been announced — a teal loss — while Greens leader Adam Bandt has lost the seat of Melbourne.

Sky News Australia called the seat for Labor on Wednesday afternoon in what will be a devastating defeat for the minor party.

The minor party held four lower house seats going into the federal election but is currently on zero as the count continues in the Queensland seat of Ryan.

In the sunshine state, the Greens also lost the inner-city seats of Brisbane and Griffith.

Melbourne

Labor’s Sarah Witty leads by 1640 votes (9am, AEC data)

Greens leader Adam Bandt has lost the seat of Melbourne, where he has comfortably held office since 2010.

At the last federal election Mr Bandt had won on a comfortable margin of 6.5 per cent.

Kooyong

Independent Monique Ryan leading by 366 votes

Monique Ryan looks to be losing ground in her fight to hold on to Kooyong.

Bendigo

The Nationals’ Andrew Lethlean leading by 714 votes

The seat of Bendigo is still up in the air, with 714 votes hanging between Labor’s Lisa Chesters and the Nationals’ Andrew Lethlean.

The Nationals is leading on a two-party preferred preference.

The Bendigo electorate is held by Jacinta Allan, but Labor insiders say the swing against the party in the seat was due to the Nationals choosing to run a candidate.

Currently, 87 per cent of the ballot papers have been counted.

Calwell

Labor in the lead (preferences not counted)

No preferences counted yet but on first preference votes Labor‘s Basem Abdo is sitting ahead of the Liberal’s Usman Ghani.

Flinders

Liberal Zoe McKenzie in the lead (preferences not counted)

South of Melbourne in Flinders Liberal’s Zoe McKenzie is ahead of independent Ben Smith with 41.17 per cent of first preference votes.
