Police believe a box knife was used to stab a group of teenagers during a huge brawl at an eastern suburbs shopping centre.

Officers were called to the food court area of Westfield Doncaster about 5.30pm on Friday after terrified shoppers alerted police.

Three teenage boys were rushed to hospital following the alleged stabbing attack during the brawl involving up to seven youths.

It is understood a box cutter, or Stanley knife, was used to inflict the wounds on three of the boys.

Officers arrested and charged five youths late on Friday evening.

The charges are understood to be attempted robbery, affray and assault.

Three of the boys were bailed.

Two were remanded in police custody.

Another boy was released pending summons.

Two of those boys taken to hospital have since been released and one remained in a stable condition on Saturday morning.

Chief Commissioner Shane Patton said police responded swiftly to the incident.

“The response from police involved has been significant and has held them to account,” he said.

“It was concerning for the public when you have a confrontation like that.

“Of course it’s concerning when we see any incident like this in a public place.”

Friday’s alleged attack is the latest in a string of knife incidents at shopping centres across the city.

There have been reported attacks at Woodgrove, Highpoint, Watergardens, Bayside, Epping Plaza, Pacific Werribee and CS Square so far this year.

That included the fatal stabbing of 16-year-old Oscar Hamilton at Melton West last month.

He was allegedly murdered outside the food court of Woodgrove before his friends made a passionate plea to end knife violence.

A 15-year-old boy remains before the courts.
