AFL mourns Troy Selwood's passing

Former Brisbane Lions star and Geelong Grammar staff member Troy Selwood will be farewelled at the home of the Cats, GMHBA Stadium, on Valentine’s Day.

Selwood’s grieving mum Maree posted on social media on Friday night: “Sadly we will saying goodbye to our beautiful Troy on Friday 14th February 2025 at GMHBA Stadium, Geelong, at 10am.”

Troy was one of four brothers to play in the AFL, he was the twin brother of premiership Eagle Adam Selwood and the older brother of four-time premiership Cat Joel Selwood and former Eagle and Cat Scott Selwood.

He was also a father to two young children.

News of his sudden death has shattered the football community.

He was just 40 when he died.

Ms Selwood said Troy’s funeral service would be live streamed by Tuckers.

On Friday Troy, who ran Geelong Grammar’s football program and assisted the sports scholars at the prestigious school, was remembered as having gone above and beyond his ‘Head of Football and Sports Performance Mentor’ title.

On February 5 AFL legend and radio star Brendan Fevola said: “It’s just a real shock. Obviously in the footy world, we can have this persona that we’re tough and we can handle anything. But we are human and we don’t really speak about our feelings often — and that’s not just in the footy world, but as men in general.

“Obviously he was going through a bit of a tough time and it ended yesterday. He’s got two young kids … it’s just really upsetting and shattering that you just think: ‘What could you have done?’ But you can’t do anything. It’s so hard.”

Messages of support for Maree Selwood from friends have flooded her post about Troy’s farewell service.
