A driver has captured footage of the moment a truck driver forcefully shoved a ute out of its lane in a near-collision in Greensborough.
Dashcam footage shows a truck tailgating on the M80 Ring Road before the ute in front indicates to move into the left lane.
The truck lays on the horn as it shoves around the ute before it could change lanes.
Then, the truck driver is seen swerving into the left lane toward the ute, forcing the ute to quickly move into a turning lane toward a concrete barricade to avoid being struck.
The footage was posted to Reddit and is understood to have also been shared with Crime Stoppers.
Reddit users were quick to share their similar experiences avoiding trucks and being tailgated, calling the driver in the footage a “road bully”.
“Seen so much of this of late, I’m often on the road and will have trucks swerving in and out of lanes and right up behind me even when sitting on the speed limit,” one said.
“This happened to me a few weeks ago on the M1, leaving Hoppers Crossing area. Truck cut me off, and while on the highway he consistently kept drifting into my lane. Absolute f--kwit,” another said.
“This bit of road is insanely dangerous at the moment, people just refuse to do 60, despite there being no safe stopping areas and concrete barricades everywhere, another wrote.
A Victoria Police spokesperson warned all motorists should maintain a safe distance from the vehicle travelling in front — or risk a hefty fine.
“Not only is it illegal to not (leave a safe distance), but it is courteous to other motorists and allows sufficient time to react, which can help prevent collisions from occurring — particularly in bad weather, in heavy traffic and when visibility is poor,” a police spokesperson said.
“Motorists should be reminded that not leaving a sufficient distance to the vehicle in front, often known as tailgating, is an offence and carries a penalty of $296 and one demerit point.”
Victoria Police urged motorists to report dangerous behaviour and submit dashcam vision to Crime Stoppers.
“Police are always on the lookout for poor driving behaviour, and we won’t hesitate to hold motorists to account who show disregard for any road rules,” a spokesperson said.
“Dashcam vision is incredibly useful evidence and can help us follow up matters, investigate and where possible, hold offenders to account.”
