Police have been granted more time to build their case against an alleged pedophile charged with dozens of child sex offences on multiple children at a childcare centre in Melbourne’s west.

Joshua Brown, of Point Cook, has been accused of committing child sex offences against eight children aged five months to two years old at a Point Cook centre where he worked between October 2021 and February 2024.

The 73 charges against him include sexual penetration of a child under 12, intentionally sexually touching a child, producing child abuse material and engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child.

He also faces charges of contaminating goods with intent to cause, or being reckless as to whether it would cause public alarm or anxiety.

It comes as it’s alleged Mr Brown used his body fluids to tamper with food.

According to court documents the alleged offences he was charged for occurred between April 2022 and May 2025.

He is alleged to have sexually abused children on six dates between April 2022 and January 2023.

On Tuesday at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court Magistrate Donna Bakos approved the Crown’s submission for an extension to produce a hand up brief against Mr Brown — giving detectives more time to complete their investigation.

During a brief application hearing Mr Brown’s lawyer Rishi Nathwani KC objected to charge sheets being released to the media, claiming it was “premature” to do so.

Mr Nathwani also raised the possibility of “more and/or different charges” being laid against Mr Brown.

Charge sheets were ultimately released to the media.

Investigators arrested Mr Brown on the Monday morning of May 12, four days after his last shift at Milestones Early Learning in Bundoora the previous Thursday.

The parents of the Point Cook man’s eight alleged victims were notified by police last month.

Mr Brown was remanded to return to court for committal mention on February 10.

Michael Simon Wilson, 36, has also been charged with 45 offences, including rape in April and sexually penetrating a dog at Wyndham Vale in June 2022.

The crown was also granted an extension to produce the hand up brief against Mr Wilson.

Mr Wilson was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on November 15.

His charges do not involve Victorian childcare centres and do not involve any of Joshua Brown’s alleged victims.

The pair are known to each other but their relationship is unclear.

Since the allegations against Mr Brown came to light, more than 2000 children have been required to undergo blood tests to check for sexually transmitted infections.

The case has also sparked a national ‘Keep Them Safe’ campaign to establish a national, public register of working with children checks accessible to parents, carers and community organisations, catching offenders who jump move across various jurisdictions to hide under the radar.
