Madi Rohan, wife of Geelong premiership player Gary, has shared a heartfelt post on her Instagram after the premature birth of their son Hugo, speaking of their anguish at seeing their baby “amongst the tubes and attachments”.
Hugo was finally able to be brought home on Sunday night to join his parents and older brother Gus, who was born last year, after being under around-the-clock hospital care in the weeks since his birth.
Madi said in her post how much of a rollercoaster the last few weeks have been for the family.
“Words can’t explain the feelings and emotions we have been through over the last fortnight since welcoming our boy,” she said.
“And we want to say a big thank you to everyone who has got us through. The countless meals, messages, flowers and gifts are so greatly appreciated.
“We spent a week unsure of what our boy even looked like, unable to see his precious face amongst the tubes and attachments. It was days until we were able to hold him, or feed him, or even see what hair colour he had.
“But we made a tough little cookie, a fighter, and couldn’t be more grateful to have him home now with us and his big brother.
“The best and worst week all rolled into one, but so glad we never have to follow him in another ambulance or leave a hospital without him again!”
It has been a stressful and at times heartbreaking path to parenthood for the pair, who suffered a miscarriage in the first year of marriage, before baby Gus arrived in early 2024.
Rohan, who has three other children, also lost a child in 2018 when twin daughter Willow, whom he had with ex-wife Amie, died shortly after childbirth from anencephaly. Twin sister Bella survived the ordeal.
Madi said it was now time to “make up for all of the cuddles we missed” with baby Hugo.
