Brisbane Lions turned on the style in a huge second half performance to sink Calder Cannons in a Coates Talent League boys clash in Brisbane.

The Lions, who led by only eight points at halftime after letting a 20-point advantage slip away nearing the main break, went on a 42-1 run at one stage in the second half before the Cannons found their range late on.

The 12.16 (88) to 6.8 (44) success over an opponent who had won three of their opening four games in Victoria, showed the undoubted talent in the squad and gives them plenty of encouragement as they get ready to face Dandenong Stingrays in Victoria next weekend.

The Lions had lost their opening two games against Northern Knights and Eastern Ranges by a combined seven points.

Calder play their next game in Queensland against Gold Coast Suns.

In the girls game, three goals from Isabella McDonough and a brilliant defensive display highlighted by Poppy Tindal’s desperate late tackle on Tahlia Motta, paved the way for a 68-point win for Brisbane Lions over the Calder Cannons.

The Lions, who have bounced back in some style since their first-up loss to Northern Knights at the end of April, had this game well under control by halftime. A run of 29-1 extended their lead to 44 points and the Canoons never got close to scoring again, let alone trying to make a game of it.

PREVIEW

The quality of Brisbane Lions Academy prospects is showing no signs of slowing down.

In this year’s group, several players are already putting themselves into AFL Draft contention after appearances in the Northern Academy Series and Coates Talent League.

The Lions will continue their Coates league campaign this weekend when they host the Calder Cannons at Brighton Homes Arena on Sunday with the game set to be live streamed from 10.30am, with the girls game to follow.

A quartet of draft eligible talents have impressed in recent weeks including “developing ruckman” Tom Gillett who Lions head coach of male programs Mitch Hahn likened to Western Bulldogs star Tim English.

“He’s a really mobile ruckman, who has nice skills,” he said.

“Like a young Tim English, he covers the ground well, is able to use the footy and is working on the physical side of his game.”

Key forward Ty Gallop is another player who would have caught the attention of recruits in recent weeks.

After six goals in three games against other NSW and Queensland AFL team academies, he’s followed it up five majors in the last fortnight.

“He’s a really strong marking forward,” Hahn said.

“He’s averaged about 2.5 goals a game for the season which is a really impressive return for any forward.

“Even we played one game in heavy rain and he was able to have a presence.”

At the other end of the ground, Ryan Gilder and Harrison Ronchi are enjoying impressive seasons.

Learning from four-time Hawthorn premeirshup hero Grant Birchall, who is Hahn’s assistant coach, has been big in their development.

“There’s not many better to learn from,” Han said.

“Ryan is spending a bit of time off halfback, his toughness and competitiveness are two of the traits which have really stood out.”

Hahn and his coaching staff will also have plenty of exciting talent to work with heading into next year with several bottom-aged talents featuring in recent weeks.

They include Raphael Geesu who Han described as an “exciting pressure forward”.

Ben Lillico, Daniel Annable and Harrison Bridge have also been in strong form.

“The level of talent is growing every year,” Hahn said.

“The Academy is obviously aiming to find high level talents who might play some AFL footy. Bruce Reville, who debuted in the senior team last week against Gold Coast, is an Academy graduate.

“He finished up then came through the VFL team as well. For us, we want our players to go out and play the best level of footy they can after being in this Academy.

“If that’s in other states, we see it as a real positive for us.”
