Illegal hoon meeting disrupted and 33 drivers arrested in huge western suburbs road blitz

A major police crackdown has led to dozens of arrests, including one man who was caught with a machete in the back of an allegedly stolen car.

More than 30 dodgy drivers, including those at an illegal suburban hooning event, were arrested during a four-day police blitz across the western suburbs.

Several drivers were performing burnouts at a hoon meet at Keilor Park before police swarmed the area on a Friday night in late May.

One of the vehicles had previously had its registration cancelled and was impounded, while the 22-year-old driver was slapped with a range of driving offences.

Police also found a machete stashed in the back seat of an allegedly stolen car after it was tracked through St Albans on May 31.

Officers tried to intercept the vehicle before the driver allegedly took off, only to be halted by stop sticks a short time later.

The huge blade was allegedly found stored in the rear and the 27-year-old driver was arrested and charged.

A motorcyclist accused of speeding at 200km/h along the Western Ring Rd was also allegedly found in possession of methamphetamine and $16,400 in cash.

Acting Inspector Kerrie Clarke said the 33 arrests during the operation marked a huge success for fellow motorists.

“We, like the community, are rightly concerned about dangerous driving on our roads, including those stealing cars to further their offending,” she said.

“Vehicle crime is a huge priority for us, with offenders arrested weekly and stolen cars regularly being recovered.”
