Bendigo Kangan Institute chief executive Sally Curtain will be the next Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry boss.

Ms Curtain said she was honoured to be selected as VCCI’s next CEO.

“My ambition is to position the Victorian Chamber for the future – supporting business to adopt AI, empowering and equipping young and new business owners to succeed and responding to the needs of business in growth areas will be among my areas of initial focus.

“I have spent my career solving complex problems, driving change and harnessing every opportunity – I can’t wait to lead the Victorian Chamber into this next chapter of its prestigious 174-year history.”

Ms Curtain will start at VCCI on September 1.

The search for a new CEO of VCCI was started after long-time boss Paul Guerra was selected to run the Melbourne Football Club in April.

Mr Guerra will step into his new role with the Demons in September after the 14th World Chambers Congress wraps up on September 4.

Mr Guerra played a critical role representing the state’s businesses during the Covid pandemic and fought for major financial support packages for industries deeply impacted by lockdowns.

Victorian Chamber President Adrian Kloeden said the organisation was “thrilled” to have secured a high-calibre CEO to replace Mr Guerra.

“Sally brings purpose-led and future-fit leadership attributes, strategic vision and a transformational approach that aligns with our direction and will be warmly embraced by our team, members and clients,” he said.

Ms Curtain said it had been a privilege to lead the Bendigo Kangan Institute for the past six years.

“Our purpose has always been such a great source of pride, and I am so proud of what the team at BKI has achieved, and will continue to achieve, in the future,” she said.

Before that, Ms Curtain was an executive director at Vic Roads for a year and a half and held several senior roles at the City of Casey for more than five years. She was also involved in the establishment of the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission.

Other names that were considered as potential candidates for the VCCI CEO role included former City of Melbourne chief executive Justin Hanney and former deputy lord mayor Arron Wood, who was unsuccessful in his bid to become lord mayor at last year’s election.

Bendigo Kangan Institute will commence a recruitment process for a new CEO as soon as possible.

The Bendigo Kangan Institute was formed when the Kangan Institute and Bendigo TAFE merged in 2014 to provide improved vocational education across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.
