A doctor at The Austin Hospital in Melbourne’s north has been charged after a phone was allegedly found recording colleagues in a staff toilet.
Junior doctor, Ryan Cho, was arrested by the Mernda Sexual Offence and Child Abuse Investigation Team on Thursday morning after they raided his Heidelberg West home.
Police believe the phone was only discovered after being in place for a significant amount of time.
“The device is believed to have been in place for some time before staff became aware and reported the matter,” they said.
The 27-year-old was charged on Thursday afternoon with stalking and using an optical surveillance device.
The Herald Sun understands the bathroom where the phone was allegedly placed was in a staff only area, and the general public and patients did not have access to it.
An Austin Health spokesman said they “recently made a formal report to Victoria Police”.
“As this matter is now with the Police, we are not able to share more information about the nature of the report,” he said.
“We take the safety and wellbeing of our staff extremely seriously.”
The Herald Sun understands the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency — who has the power to suspend healthcare practitioners they believe pose a risk to others — has not taken any action against the doctor’s registration yet, but the agency is expected to consider the case soon.
In Australia, healthcare practitioners who are charged with an offence that is punishable by 12 months imprisonment or more are required to notify AHPRA.
Minister for Health, Mary-Anne Thomas, and her department, have been informed of the junior doctor’s arrest.
“We are aware of the alleged incident at Austin Health,” a spokesperson said.
“Everyone has the right to feel safe at their job — no matter who they are or where they work.
“As this matter is now before Victoria Police, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
The man was bailed to appear at Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on 29 August.
