An AFL player has been charged with rape and a string of other serious sexual offences.

Police yesterday confirmed the man has been charged with two counts of sexual assault, one count of rape and one count of sexual assault by compelling sexual touching.

The alleged offending took place in the Geelong area.

The Herald Sun cannot identify the player for legal reasons.

Any details of the alleged offending also cannot be made public.

It is understood the player was charged by Ballarat sexual offences and child abuse investigation team earlier this month.

An AFL spokesperson said: “The AFL has on Friday been made aware of serious charges against a player. We are now seeking more information.”

The player’s club was also contacted for comment.

A second man was also charged over the alleged incident. He was charged with two counts of sexual assault, two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault by compelling sexual touching.

It is the third high-profile rape case to be kept secret in recent months.

A Melbourne man was in December committed to stand trial for rape of a woman on March 23 in 2023.

That Melbourne man has been charged with four serious sexual offences but his identity remains a secret.

Details of that man’s alleged offending were aired during a committal hearing last year, including that the woman called police to the man’s Melbourne home about 3.40am March last year.

When she opened the front door, the court heard police believed she appeared “impaired” and “there were two lines of cocaine”.

“Should I speak to a lawyer?” the man asked police, while denying wrongdoing.

The Melbourne Magistrates’ Court heard the woman had agreed that the man could “sleep in bed with her” before there was “alleged non-consensual touching of breast that proceeded to digital-vaginal and penile-vaginal penetration”.
