North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un has cracked down on the country’s citizens, implementing strict new bans to prevent them from becoming Westernised.
The Sun reports that Kim has forbidden North Koreans to eat hotdogs.
Serving the popular snack is now considered an act of treason.
Anyone caught selling hotdogs on the streets or cooking the sausages at home risks deportation to North Korea’s notorious labour camps.
But eating canines is still allowed. Dog meat is considered a national dish in North Korea, with numerous restaurants serving it.
Owning pet dogs was decreed by Kim in 2020 to be “a ‘tainted’ trend by bourgeouis ideology,’’ a source told Chosun Ilbo, a South Korean newspaper.
The ban on hotdogs is the latest example of Pyongyang cracking down on what it sees as the invasion of Western culture.
Budae-jjigae — a spicy noodle soup made using hotdogs or Spam — was imported from pro-Western South Korea in 2017.
But a vendor in the northern province of Ryanggang said: “Sales of budae-jjigae in the market have stopped.
“The police and market management have said anyone caught selling it will be shut down.”
The dictator has also ordered that divorcing couples be sent to a labour camp to atone for their “crimes”.
He wants both spouses to serve up to six months, as the dissolution of a marriage is seen as “anti-socialist”.
And in December, he warned any North Korean celebrating Christmas could face execution.
Meanwhile, Volodomyr Zelenskyy announced that North Korea is suffering heavy losses of troops in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
“In battles yesterday and today near just one village, Makhnovka, in Kursk region, the Russian army lost up to a battalion of North Korean infantry soldiers and Russian paratroops.”
The Ukraine leader labelled the losses as “significant”.
Russian leader Vladimir Putin has managed to call in over 10,000 reinforcements from his his ally Kim Jong-un over in North Korea, claim Ukraine and the West.
North Korean losses in Kursk are mounting up with Russia using the troops as cannon fodder, Zelenskyy has claimed.
