Police have shared the gruesome details of an alleged late-night hit-and-run that followed a neighbourhood dispute over dogs.
Police were called to Cygnus Close in Doonside in Sydney’s west about 8.50pm on Monday following reports of a “neighbour dispute”.
Officers arrived to find two people, a 41-year-old man and 42-year-old woman, had allegedly been hit by an SUV.
The woman was treated by paramedics for serious head injuries and the man was treated for serious head, chest and leg injuries.
Detective Superintendent Darren Newman told reporters he had listened to CCTV obtained from a nearby home and said the “screams are absolutely horrifying”.
Both remain in a serious condition at Westmead Hospital though police said their injuries could be “lifelong”.
Police say the neighbourhood dispute ignited while the couple in their 40s were walking their pet dogs, with the 41-year-old man and a 27-year-old man engaging in a verbal altercation.
The dispute played out over a period of time, with the couple returning to the 27-year-old man’s home multiple times, according to police.
They say at one stage, the younger man threatened the older man with an axe.
The dispute finally came to a head after 8pm when the 27-year-old man allegedly reversed his car into the couple.
Alison Anderson said she was shocked to see dozens of police as she drove into the street where her mother lives on Tuesday morning.
The tree out the front of her mum’s house still has shards of red plastic brake light embedded in the bark.
“You can see where (the driver) scraped his axel and smashed into the tree, you can see all the debris,” she said.
“It’s so sad that it actually happened on your turf, in your street.”
“They’re good people, we’ve never had any dramas.
“Now they are fighting for life in the hospital, you don’t expect this to happen here.
“I just pray for the family and that they pull through.”
A 27-year-old man was arrested nearby and taken to Blacktown Hospital where he remains under police guard.
No charges have been laid.
