TWO people and a child have narrowly escaped drowning at a popular beach southeast of Hobart after a fishing trip went wrong.
Tasmania Police responded to a call for assistance shortly before 8:30pm last night after the trio were caught in the rising tide near Clifton Beach.
They had been fishing in Pipe Clay Lagoon since the early evening and became disoriented as they attempted to make their way to shore in the dark with the tide changing quickly.
Residents and onlookers guided police to the trio, who managed to discard their fishing equipment and swim to shore.

“This incident serves as a reminder to all Tasmanians that safety needs to be front of mind as we return to enjoying more outdoor activities again,” said Inspector Rebecca Davis.
“Please ensure that you take the time to plan your outing properly, make sure you have the relevant safety equipment and that you understand the local conditions.
“Let others know where you are going and when you will be returning, and make sure your phone battery is charged.
