German supermarket giant Aldi has received the green light to build its second Townsville store at Burdell, after Townsville City Council’s decision to approve was confirmed by Division 2 councillor Brodie Phillips.

In a post to social media on Friday morning, Cr Phillips said the council’s Planning and Development Team recently approved Onefin Burdell Pty Ltd’s development application to change their existing approval to include the addition of a supermarket.

“Construction is well underway for the existing approval for two drive thru facilities and a daycare centre,” Cr Phillips said.

In an earlier post on July 25, Mr Phillips shared photos of the proposed development, which would be located between McDonalds and Strand Fitness at 30-38 North Shore Boulevard.

The change to their existing development approval to allow for a supermarket was considered to be impact assessable, requiring a public notification process to be undertaken by the applicant between July 24 and August 15.

In its decision notice dated September 3, Townsville City Council said the development application “was assessed and approved subject to conditions”, with the decision made on August 29, 2024.

It is unclear when construction would begin on the supermarket or when it would begin welcoming excited shoppers.

Townsville warmly welcomed the opening of its first Aldi supermarket in November 2023, with hundreds of eager shoppers queuing up for its grand opening.

An Aldi spokeswoman said they were pleased that Townsville City Council approved the planning application for the addition of a supermarket at the Burdell site.

“Aldi is working closely with the developer to review the approval and is excited about the opportunity to open a second store in Townsville,” the spokeswoman said.

“The community has been incredibly supportive since we opened our first ALDI store in Willows Shopping Centre in November 2023, bringing our much-loved middle aisle to North Queensland for the first time.

“All being well, it’s great that more residents will be able to experience ALDI’s ‘Good Different’ shopping experience and we will update the community as our plans progress.”
