Townsville’s beloved Queens Gardens has been torn up by vandals on electric bikes and scooters – and the Acting Mayor is fuming.
Cr Ann-Maree Greaney has slammed the destruction as “senseless”, revealing the wedding lawn and other grassed areas have suffered serious damage.
The attacks have left sections of the lawn badly damaged, with some couples now potentially facing impacts to their ceremonies and costly disruptions to their big day.
“This damage isn’t minor,” Cr Greaney said.
“It has effects on our gardens and it has impacts on members of our community who have planned special events like weddings and vow renewals in this space.”
Even fencing hasn’t been enough to stop the culprits, who continue to breach barriers just to carve up the grounds.
“To say that I am disgusted and disappointed is an understatement,” she said.
The council has reported the vandalism to Queensland Police, with an official investigation now underway.
Locals with relevant information are being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, quoting reference QP2500536374.
