Bruce Highway, Townsville street closures: Flooding rain causes roads to close

The Bruce Hwy between Townsville and Ayr has reopened but authorities warn motorists to limit their travel, with many suburbs entering their third day without power. Full list of road closures + power outages here.

The North Queensland coastline is being subjected to widespread flooding, with people warned to stay off the roads if they can.

The Bruce Highway between Townsville and Ayr has reopened as of 10am Tuesday, February 4 but authorities ask motorists to limit their travel to only necessary trips.

Townsville suburbs without power:

Balgal Beach, Picnic and Horseshoe Bays and Bluewater residents have resumed with power.

- Cungulla, 276 homes affected since 4.10pm Sunday
- Majors Creek, 69 homes affected since 8.33am Sunday

Hinchinbrook:

Palm Island residents have resumed with power.

- Entire region, 6,178 homes affected since 10am Sunday after Ingham substation was switched off

- Mutarnee-Bambaroo, 214 homes affected since 2.15am Sunday (crews unable to continue work due to flooding)

- Cardwell, 442 homes affected since 11.44pm Sunday

Burdekin:

- Giru, 57 homes affected since 11am Sunday

Charters Towers:

- Basalt, 30 homes affected since 4.20am Sunday

- Bluewater Springs, 192 homes affected since 10am Sunday

Townsville Airport reopens

The Townsville Airport has reopened as of 6am, February 3.

Passengers are encouraged to continue monitoring their flight status before heading to the airport at www.townsvilleairport.com.au/flightboard

Ferry services cancelled:

UPDATE 8am Sunday:

SeaLink North Queensland has advised due to strong winds exceeding 30 knots creating unsafe travel conditions and advice from local authorities, the below changes will be made to ferry services to Magnetic Island.

“Ferry Services from Townsville and Magnetic Island on Sunday 2 February 2025 have been CANCELLED for the safety of our passengers and crew.

“We continue to act on the latest available information and weather forecasts. We appreciate your understanding as we prioritise safety above all else.

“Marine conditions and forecast weather conditions continue to change rapidly, and we provide as much notice as possible.

“Our next Magnetic Island service update will be after BOM updates on Sunday 2 February at 11am for Monday 3 February 2025.”

The SeaLink ferry terminals will remain closed Sunday.
