A frightened mother called the police on her 22-year-old son after she found drugs and a sawn-off rifle in her garage, the Townsville Supreme Court heard.

The court heard that the mother had a domestic violence order against her son who had a methamphetamine addiction and originally he was not allowed near her home.

Crown prosecutor Rana Aldas said the mother then relented and allowed her son to store some of his belongings in her garage.

But when she found the rifle, ammunition and drugs on February 25, 2023, she called police and they searched his car and the garage.

Ms Aldas told the court last week that police seized a .32 shortened rifle, ammunition, 278g of cannabis, 15.7g of MDMA, 6.34g of cocaine and scales.

She said the drugs, which were mostly of poor quality, were for personal use only.

The scaffolder, now 23, pleaded guilty to 13 charges involving contravening domestic violence orders, drug and weapons offences.

The man told his mum and police that he had the dangerous weapon for his own protection.

Ms Aldas said there had not been any actual violence by the man to his mother but described the combination of drugs and a dangerous weapon as ‘quite concerning to the community at large’.

The man’s barrister, Kelly Stone, said his client had spent 188 days in pre-sentence custody and his mother had now had the DV orders removed by the Magistrates Court.

“Mum has visited him every week he has been in custody and they are making headway to mending their relationship,’’ he said.

“When he is released he has work promised with his old employer as a scaffolder and he plans to further his drug rehabilitation.

“He could not give me a real reason why he had the weapon, but the shock of being in jail for the first time has hit home.’’

Justice David North told the man he would have change his ways ‘quite dramatically’.

He sentenced the man to two years jail with parole from May this year.
