A clothing brand is turning iconic Australian marine animals into a fashion statement as a way to raise funds for the breathtaking Great Barrier Reef.
The idea for Reef Rebellion first struck Katt Andryskova in 2019, but it wouldn’t be until 2022 before the first ink dried on their hand printed fishing shirts.
“(Me and my partner) are both massive divers … and we just love the ocean so much,” she said.
“All the current ocean fishing shirts were really brightly coloured and there’s a lot of dead fish on them and a lot of stuff going on so we wanted something a bit more minimalist and stylish that you can wear both on the boat but then potentially to work, or a date.”
In an effort to do their part to help the reef, a portion of profits from each item sold is donated to non-for-profits such as Cairns based Reef Restoration and Finstitute at JCU to help shark research.
“I used to volunteer a lot of my time with Sea Shepherd and Reef Restoration Foundation and various other ocean related non-for-profits but because we moved around so much, donating my time was harder,” Ms Andryskova said.
“We thought, why not combine that passion of helping the ocean with our business?”
Their designs are created by an artist in Ukraine, with their most popular being a vibrant coral trout and a tropical crayfish T-shirt.
Reef Rebellion also sells sea-inspired necklaces, diving mask straps and hats.
“We’ve found that a lot of people really love them, not only because we try to make them bright and colourful, but still scientifically accurate drawings,” Ms Andryskova said.
