THE first sod has been turned on a new $8 million development at North Shore that’s set to become a social and commercial hub for the community’s northern precincts.

The first stage of The Junction is now under construction and will feature a coffee shop, state-of-the art playground, display village and new sales centre, set to be completed by late 2021.

Stockland project director Andrew Astorquia said the small commercial area will be within walking distance of 3000 homes.

“It’s the next phase of the evolution of North Shore which now has a population of about five-and-a-half thousand people, which will grow to 15,000 people,” he said.

“That sort of population starts to need more and more community amenity, so this will be a … safe place to come, sit down with the kids and let them roam free in the parklands.”

The project is a boon for local builders with earthworks undertaken by Hansen Constructions and Gedoun Constructions also jumping on board.

A rise in people purchasing land and building homes thanks to government grants is spurning on commercial projects as confidence rises in the commercial construction sector.

Managing director Joe Gedoun said around 50-60 people will be directly and indirectly involved the construction of the land sales office and cafe.

“It’s safe to say confidence is pretty high in the construction industry at the moment in Townsville,” he said.

“Hansen Constructions are the earthmoving company for the project so they’ll come and do their bit and we’ll come in after them.”
