A man has been taken into custody after residents in Townsville reportedly stepped in to assist a motorist during an alleged assault where a man was trying to break into a car.

A man has been taken into custody after residents in Townsville reportedly stepped in to assist a motorist during an alleged assault where a man was trying to break into a car.

Police are investigating an assault at a Pimlico address just after 10.30am on Monday.

Initial information indicates a male offender attempted to gain entry to a vehicle on Palmerston Street but was apprehended thanks to the quick actions of nearby residents.

Police said the man was taken into custody at the scene and is assisting police with inquiries.
