Townsville meth seizure

Specialist police have seized a massive 1.6 kilograms of methylamphetamine in a major drug bust as part of Operation Whiskey Legion’s ongoing crackdown in Townsville.

Officers from the Major Organised Crime Squad and Public Safety Response Team raided a Cluden property on Saturday, where they allegedly uncovered the drugs alongside cannabis, cash, and drug paraphernalia.

Police also allegedly found a collection of weapons, including a baton, an electrical antipersonnel device, and a flick knife.

A 30-year-old man is now facing multiple charges, including drug trafficking, supplying dangerous drugs, unlawful possession of weapons, and possessing property linked to criminal activity.

He was remanded in custody and will face the Townsville Magistrates Court on Monday.

Also charged in connection with the raid was a 22-year-old man from Vincent, who faces drug possession charges and is due to appear in court on September 25.

This is one of 36 search warrants executed since Operation Whiskey Legion launched in Townsville last Wednesday.

The multi-agency operation has led to the arrest of 154 people on 285 charges as it targets high-risk offenders across the region.

It comes after police allegedly caught a 46-year-old Idalia man with a kilogram of meth in the Castletown shopping centre car park last Thursday as the eight-day operation kicked off.

Townsville District Officer Chief Superintendent Graeme Paine has praised the Whiskey Legion’s early success.

“By targeting those who pose the greatest threats, we’ve arrested a number of high-risk offenders – removing them from the community and preventing them causing further harm,” he said.
