UPDATE, 11.50am: The Explosive Ordinance Response Team (EORT) are investigating.

A crime scene has been declared.

Police have closed off a section of Riverway Dr to all traffic and set up an exclusion zone after crews responding to a car fire at 6am noticed a ‘suspicious device’ near the road.

It is understood initial observations believed the device resembled a homemade bomb.

QFES said their fire crews were called out to the car fire around 5.45am this morning, Monday October 7, and found a single-cab ute “well involved” in fire.

Fire crews put the blaze out in around five minutes, but soon police were contacted regarding a ‘suspicious’ item seen nearby.

Queensland Police said they were called to the job around 5.55am.

“Emergency services were called to a vehicle fire on Upper Ross River Road, Pinnacles this morning,” a spokesperson said.

“Upon arrival a suspicious item was located near the vehicle and an exclusion zone was established while crews determined the origins of the item.”

The police stressed there is no threat to public safety.

The exact location of the burnt car and exclusion zone is about 1km south of the Kelso Dr-Riverway Dr intersection past the Ross River Dam wall.

Many residents looking to head out past the dam on their King’s Birthday public holiday are being forced to turn around at the police barrier.

Both lanes of traffic are closed.
