A former National Geographic store manager masturbated outside the window of a woman’s house during a 15-month long obsession which made the woman feel like a prisoner in her own home.
Nigel Grant Jackson appeared in Townsville District Court on Wednesday after he sent multiple videos on social media of him masturbating without her consent.
Crown prosecutor Monique Sheppard said Mr Jackson was not simply “overly interested” but deliberately watched the woman, loitered and attempted to draw attention to himself by coughing or making loud noises.
“(He) did such conduct on about 15 to 20 occasions,” she said.
During this time the 45-year-old also sent six videos of him masturbating to her, despite not having any previous sexual interactions with her.
It wasn’t until several months after he sent the videos that the woman saw them, and she notified police.
However, it took two months for the police to speak to Mr Jackson, and another four months until he was charged.
Defence barrister, Ross Malcomson, said the stalking began after Mr Jackson was hit by tragedy and his “life spiralled”.
“It’s with a background of the stress and strain of being a single father to four children in a new relationship, and that new partner taking her life by suicide, that the offending commences,” he said.
The court heard Mr Jackson had grown up in a strict household where his father, who worked for the Australian Defence Force, had been a strong disciplinarian, which had negative effects on him.
Judge Anthony Rafter outlined the severe impact the stalking had on the woman’s mental health and overall sense of safety in her own home.
“She started to dress differently and covered herself up, she avoided the backyard when she was at home,” he said.
He said it also affected her sleep and overall health and caused anxiety and dissociation.
Judge Rafter said he did acknowledge Mr Jackson had no similar criminal history.
Mr Jackson pleaded guilty to unlawful stalking, using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence and sexual assault.
He was sentenced to 18 months jail, with a parole release date set immediately.
Convictions were recorded.
