Queensland's housing crisis

A ‘fast-tracked’ land development in new residential neighbourhood in Elliot Springs is set to help South Townsville’s housing woes and provide vital land supply around Townsville.

The housing crisis in Townsville has caused some families to be left to couch-surf, while other families have been reduced to living in tents and campervans.

The first parcels of land for the $1.4 billion masterplanned development went up for sale in mid-2017. In total, the community is planned to have over 10,000 homes when complete in 2056.

Lendlease’s Head of Queensland Communities Ian Murray said the company were continuing to see high levels of interest as more of the planned developments come online.

“Elliot Springs is fast becoming a hotspot for local and interstate buyers who are taking advantage of the great price points and the ability to build right now on a registered lot,” Mr Murray said.

“We’re seeing strong inquiries with a high proportion of current Townsville homeowners and renters looking to upgrade to a brand-new home.

“The community is fast taking shape with residents already enjoying a community centre, cafe, petrol station and outdoor community facilities, including a series of walking trails and Wadda Mooli Park.”

The latest land parcels added to the area will include 71 more lots ranging from 400 to 1084 square metres, with prices beginning at $150,000.

When completed, the development is expected to house over 26,000 residents and feature commercial and employment zones as well as six schools, childcare facilities, retailers and neighbourhood centres.

Elliot Springs resident, Carly Randall, said the natural features of the location had been a big benefit in swaying her family to move there.

“There are four main reasons we chose to build in Elliot Springs; the natural surroundings and active outdoor lifestyle, location, which for us is right in-between our workplaces, the community feel, particularly for young families and affordability of the land with the flexibility to build what suits our family,” Ms Randall said.

“A big selling point were the great parks, trails and footpaths, the surrounding natural landscape and wildlife offers a tranquil and peaceful neighbourhood.

“There is such a wonderful community feel here. We look forward to meeting our future neighbours, participating in family events and sports, and engaging with the community garden, yoga, and other initiatives.”
