A lot can change in the businessworld over 30 years, but Townsville business Natures Wisdom has remained as solid and enduring as the crystals lining its shelves.
An alternative gift shop that also offers piercing and psychic readings, Natures Wisdom was founded at the Stockland Townsville Shopping Centre by Anne and Trevor Ryan in 1993.
Current owner Jason Lynch is a friend of the family, and said it was his favourite shop when he was growing up, so much so that he asked them for a job after completing high school in 2005.
Instantly feeling “at home” in the store, and completing a traineeship in small business management, he leapt at an opportunity to purchase the business in 2014.
“It’s kind of like a hippy shop, is a slang way I describe the store,” Mr Lynch said.
“It sells incense, assorted collectibles, clothing, … but our other main focuses are body piercing and we have some ladies that do Tarot readings.
“I believe that it’s probably the longest running independent store in (Stockland). It feels nice to know that a store like this can survive in a shopping centre in this day and age.”
While there was plenty of interest in their collection of minerals and semiprecious stones, Mr Lynch said the strongest customer demand was for body piercing.
Some trends have come and gone but generic piercings around the earlobes and cartilage have remained “fairly timeless”, while nose piercings have been popular over the last 20 years.
“We do nipples but we don’t do any other genitals … so every other location that’s safe to do,” he said.
“You see some people coming in looking for TikTok trends, but some of them are a little unsafe, like (piercing) the tongue that goes through the middle, like side to side – that’s one we don’t deal with.”
Mr Lynch hoped to do some “fun in-store stuff” towards the end of the year celebrate the 30th anniversary with his five staff.
A Stockland spokeswoman congratulated the hardworking team at Natures Wisdom on reaching the milestone.
“Natures Wisdom’s connection with its customers and unique offer has made it an enduring part of the Townsville community,” she said.
