A man has been fined after being detected going almost 200km an hour in an 80km zone, telling police he didn’t have an excuse and “there was nobody around”.

Townsville police have released footage of the West End man who was going 198km on University Rd in Annandale about 8.45pm on April 20.

The 34 year old received a $1854 fine, lost eight demerit points and received a six-month high-speed licence suspension.

In the video, the officer can be heard asking “what compelled you to 200km down here, man?”

The man replied: “There was nobody around”.

“I don't really have an excuse, to be honest.”

Acting Chief Superintendent Chris Lawson said it was extremely disturbing and disappointing to see such unsafe behaviour on our roads at any time.

“It’s not just your licence at risk when you travel at such a dangerous speed, you are putting yourself and other road users at risk of death or serious injury.”
