Remember when the absolute BEST weekend adventures as a kid were going to the hardware store or the dump with your dad?

When he’d chuck you in the car, probably lacking the proper child restraints, nary a water bottle or sandwich in sight and you wouldn’t return home until near dark — completely stoked with managing to snag a vending machine soft drink for the day.

The familiar and hilarious twinge of nostalgia is what you take away from beloved comedian Mel Buttle’s new show, Not Here to Put Socks on Centipedes, which she’s bringing to this year’s North Australian Festival of Arts in Townsville.

“If you’re looking for an hour full of laughs with no filter, Mel is one to catch,” one review reads, and it’s on the money.

The Queensland comedian is a household name on shows like The Project, Have You Been Paying Attention and Thank God You’re Here, as well as her beloved TikTok character ‘Lyn’, who a little disappointingly doesn’t make an appearance in her new stand-up show.

I saw Buttle’s show earlier this year as part of the Wagga Comedy Fest, and the way she expertly segued from childhood memories to raising a red-haired son in a lesbian relationship, to depending a little too much on her ADHD medication to why you don’t see purebred poodles anymore was impressive.

If you’ve ever seen her character of Lyn on TikTok, a perfect representative of just about every Aussie mum you know, you’ll agree Buttle’s physical comedy is just as finetuned as her punchlines.

Walking around the stage, she took me right back to being a kid following Dad around the shops looking at tools or pieces of timber, kicking the ground and complaining of boredom of hunger until he throws a few dollars at you to buy a cold can of Pasito.

An expert at improv, if you’ve ever seen her comedic chops on Thank God You’re Here or Taskmaster Australia, Buttle is also very good at knowing her audience.

She’s one to work in local anecdotes and a bit of friendly rivalry between cities she visits, so expect a bit of Townsville versus Cairns banter in her NAFA show.

Bring some valium and get ready to laugh out loud.

Mel Buttle’s ‘Not Here to Put Socks on Centipedes’ is on 5.45pm Saturday, October 5 at Strand Park. Adults are $45 (MA15+). For tickets visit www.nafa-tsv.com.au
