A new $100 million engineering facility at James Cook University in Townsville has won a prestigious international architecture and design award.
“We are immensely proud that our Engineering and Innovation Place, developed in conjunction with Kirk Studio, has been recognized in the Prix Versailles World’s Most Beautiful Campus 2025 list,” JCU Vice Chancellor Professor Simon Biggs said.
“This accolade highlights our commitment to creating sustainable and environmentally responsive spaces on campus designed to support innovation and collaboration.”
JCU said the annual world architecture and design award to be announced at Unesco, recognised “contemporary projects that leave extraordinary imprints on their living environments”.
The award criteria include innovation, creativity, reflection of local heritage and ecological efficiency.
Richard Kirk, director of Kirk Studio architects that designed the state-of-the-art building, said the Engineering and Innovation Place (EIP) set a “new benchmark for sustainable and resilient architecture in the tropics”.
He said the building redefined tropical architecture with a parasol roof that provided “climatic protection while allowing full fa̧cade transparency”.
