A packed out Queensland Country Bank stadium will watch the NRL’s best Indigenous and Maori players go toe-to-toe in the new year, with officials promising a ‘major celebration’ alongside the two headlining games.

Australian Rugby League Commission commissioner Professor Megan Davis said Townsville was a ‘fitting place’ to return to as hosts after a successful series held in New Zealand early this year.

“North Queensland and Far North Queensland have such a rich Indigenous footprint and this is such a major celebration of Australian Indigenous culture and Maori culture,” Professor Davis said.

“It’s an area that’s produced so many legends of the game.”

A week long celebration will be held across Townsville surrounding the two games, though the exact schedule is yet to be detailed, with ticket sales for the February fixture announced for this week.

Professor Davis said the week-long event would contain cultural aspects as well as entertainment, and meet and greets with players from the teams.

“It’s one of our most important games in the calendar, and because the population of First Nations people is so huge up north, it brings up a whole new dimension to it,” Professor Davis said.

“It brings a whole other element to the game, there’s something really special about the All Stars, especially when they are in those tight games. There’s the culture element and it’s quite unusual to have a game like this and to have the stadium filled with First Nations people from so many different cultures, and Maori people, it’s sometimes a little hard to describe to outsiders.

“There’s a lot of sports that go ‘we’d love a game like that’.”

Professor Davis was in Townsville for the Indigenous and Maori All Stars last clash here in 2021, when a late Latrell Mitchell penalty goal locked the scores up at 10 – 10 at full time. Since then both the men and women teams have traded wins in their last two matches, setting the stage for a square-off full of feeling and impact in Townsville.

Tickets for the representative fixture are already up for grabs, with NRL Club Members able to head online immediately.

NRL account holders will be able to grab their tickets from 4pm today while the general audience will be able to grab their seats from 10am on Thursday.

Tickets will start at $25 for adults, and $65 for families.
