“If it doesn’t taste bang on, I don’t do it.”
That is one of the driving forces behind Townsville CBD’s smoothie shop High Vibes Nutrition that boasts a range of beverages that not only sound exciting on the menu but are exciting for people’s health and fitness journeys.
On September 2 the store’s owner Haley Roberts will celebrate two years since its opening and since its launch the business has only risen to new heights with new flavours.
“I saw something like this when I was traveling and thought I could do it in Townsville and just ran with it,” Ms Roberts said.
“I wanted to bring something that was more than just a space to come in and purchase something, people can walk in and have a chat if they want to, and it’s a nice vibe.”
While the business owner shared that she followed her impulse when it came to opening the store, she said it was a strategic decision in launching in the city.
“I wanted to be part of a forward movement for the CBD,” she said.
“It was always going to be risky being that there were so many vacancies but I wanted to be part of a positive way forward. If no one invests in the area, it’s never going to get better and I wanted to put my little footprint there.”
While the hard yards such as renovating the front of the store was all down to the owner herself, her mini business partner and 10-year-old son Ashton has been the brains behind some of the most spectacular flavours.
“I wanted to do something to make my son proud,” Ms Roberts said.
“He’s often throwing smoothie recipe ideas at me or names of drinks or specials, he’s actually involved in the business.
“I’m a mum first, I think it’s really important we teach our kids how the world works and I love that he’s proud of the business and proud of me for doing it.”
The menu includes a diverse range of beverages to satisfy the starved, the peckish or the curious.
“We’ve got the protein-based smoothies, and protein-based iced coffees which are a good alternative to a normal milky iced coffee and has health benefits,” Ms Roberts said.
“We have the iced teas which are energy, collagen or recovery based so depending on your goals and what you’re looking to achieve we can accommodate those.”
When it comes to the crowd’s favourites, the owner said the most popular smoothie flavor is the Choc Oreo and Biscoff while the Nerds and Fruit Tingle Iced Teas top the list for the tea drinkers and despite the fun in the titles, the smoothies contain a lot of vitamins and minerals.
“I walk up and down the confectionary aisles and see what the new things are and I try and modify them keeping them within the macros,” Ms Roberts said.
“There have been a few I haven’t been able to keep the flavor and get the calories where I want them to be, and they won’t go on the menu.
“It has to taste how I’m displaying it to be.”
High Vibes Nutrition is open 8:30am to 2:30pm on Monday to Friday and open from 8:30am to 12pm on Saturday and Sunday and is located at 280 Flinders Street.
