Election 2025: Political sign on Dalrymple Rd says ALP and LNP are ‘two cheeks of the same a--e’

Inappropriate sign pops up making serious claims about this country’s two major political parties.

Townsville City Council is expected to issue a warning notice to the owner of a vehicle displaying a hilarious, tongue-in-cheek sign on Dalrymple Rd.

It’s not known who is behind the sign, which claims the ALP and the LNP are ‘two cheeks of the same a--e’, with no official endorsement on the advertisement.

The sign is on the back of a ute, which is parked on the side of the major road.

The election has not ramped up in Townsville yet, but this could signify the first punch, depending on who is behind it.

Running in the seat of Herbert is two-term MP Phillip Thompson for the LNP and one-time Senate candidate Edwina Andrew.

The Australian Electoral Commission says it is unclear if the billboard needs to be authorised because the “purpose of an authorisation is to ensure that communications containing electoral matter are transparent and voters know who is communicating with them”.

Communications containing electoral material require authorisation if it is a paid advertisement; is print communities such as stickers, magnets, leaflets, flyers, notices, poster and how to vote cards; or if the electoral messaging is by a ‘disclosed entity’, which includes political parties, donors, third parties, candidates or sitting MPs.

A Townsville City Council spokeswoman confirmed they were monitoring the site and will issue a warning notice to “any car parked on the road reserve or displaying political signage”.

“Council conducts blitzes in this area and other road reserves across the city to ensure the safety of road users and to protect infrastructure,” she said.
